Introduction to the Education System in Riyadh

Overview of Education in Saudi Arabia

Education in Saudi Arabia has evolved significantly over the past few decades, aligning with international standards and focusing on innovation, critical thinking, and creativity. In Riyadh, families can choose between modernized public schools, high-quality private institutions, and international schools offering globally recognized programs.

Why Riyadh’s Education Differs from Other Regions

As both the administrative and educational capital of the Kingdom, Riyadh offers one of the most diverse and advanced schooling environments. The city hosts numerous international schools serving a multicultural population, alongside bilingual national schools that integrate Saudi identity with global learning methods. This variety allows every family to find a school aligned with its values and expectations.

What Defines an International School?

International schools follow foreign curricula such as the American, British, or International Baccalaureate (IB). They offer bilingual education, advanced teaching resources, and a multicultural community, helping students develop both academic excellence and intercultural awareness.

Saudi National Curriculum

American Curriculum

Offered by several international schools, including LOINS, the American system emphasizes critical thinking, research, and student participation. At Learning Oasis International School, students experience interactive classrooms where learning is linked to real-life problem-solving.

British Curriculum

Known as the IGCSE or A-Level system, this curriculum is popular among expatriate families. It provides a rigorous academic foundation and is widely recognized by universities around the world.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme

The IB Programme is a comprehensive global curriculum that develops students intellectually, socially, and emotionally. LOINS implements IB at different stages—beginning with the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and continuing through the Middle Years Programme (MYP).

Which Curriculum Is Right for Your Child?

There is no universal “best” curriculum—it depends on your child’s personality, language abilities, and long-term goals. For families planning international university pathways, American and IB curricula are ideal. Those preferring strong Arabic and Islamic studies may find the Saudi curriculum more suitable.
